Tigers, leopards or regular kitty cats
I love all kinds of cats. I was very sad to hear that Sumatran tigers, like many other animals, are currently considered “critically” endangered. Sumatran tigers are found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. According to a tiger census report, their population has been cut in half over the last 25 years. The site Tigers in Crisis has information on many kinds of tigers. In a post about the Sumatran tiger they say:
“It is estimated that only between 500-600 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild, and the actual number may be as low as 400. And their population is dwindling rapidly.”
” around 100 live in an unprotected area, that will most likely be lost to agriculture in the near future.”
Due to agricultural growth, the forest habitats of these animals has been reduced leaving the majority of the remaining tigers to live in National Parks and Game Reserves. Illegal poaching further threatens those few still living in the unprotected areas.
Here is my latest painting, a Sumatran Tiger. You can see the speed paint video below.

Nice to see another picture from you.in this case a tiger, difficult subject. it is well done for a speedy so congrats. The fur is ok in general, but i see something extrange on colors, maybe too dark red or maybe too flat in nose, i dont know .the background will be better with more focused parts at the 1st plane ,leaves , and more blurred on 3rd planes. (DOF effect). Composition is imho too flat but if this is the intention is good done. put the main subject in the middle is a risk we have to do but knowing what are we doing. but the tiger pose is pretty. be carefull with simetry copying elements from other parts of the image. Hope this will help you my beloved Animal s Painter ;)
Hello Ramon, thank you for the comment. –Very insightful observations as always, you would make a good art teacher.
I was not real happy with his nose. Or the fur around the face looking a little too symmetrical. Maybe he brushed it for the portrait. =)
I just see it on you tube. and I think is great. What about to paint a lion? Ihm? This is beautiful but you must ,ake him a little real..I don’t know ..ti creat something then when I look to him, to make me feel to think he is real..:P
Of course I can only speak and can’y t paint so nice like you.. It’s easy to speack than to work like you :))
Hi Dyeve, -A lion would be fun to try. Youre right, I wasnt trying for super realism in this one. Glad you like it though, thank you for the comment on the video as well! =)
Hell, I wish i could do this, but the remarks above make good points. In this one, the symmetry is very pronounced and the composition devoid of depth – maybe for a nature subject too passive. The lines and movement can be created in simple pencil lines, can they not Jay.me? That is before the work starts. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work, Bob
Hi there Bob, how are you? Thank you for stopping by. Yes, a loose sketch before is very useful in composition. Not so much when working from a reference though. When I get better at the program I will be making more from my imagination. Thanks for the comment =)
Good subject choice: the balance between beauty, possible danger, and power in tigers – is interesting. It is a pity about the endangered status though. cheers
Hello C.Bosco, Thank you. Yes, very true…not sure if you want to pet it or run. Amazing creatures, I hope they will make it. =)
another very great job jayme! i wish i can paint like you… :)
Hi Ela =) Thank you very much, I wish I was better at Gimp like you =)
Another good piece of artwork. i also think what @ramon miranda tells.
Not only Sumatran tigers, tigers here in India are also getting scarce, if it goes like this then we will soon find tigers in the book pictures, and national geographic’s documentaries.
Hi Arjun, Thank you =) Yes Ramon is talented, and a very nice guy for sharing his artistic knowledge.
The site Tigers in Crisis says of the original eight subspecies of tigers, three have become extinct in the last 60 years.
The Bengal tiger from India, one of the 5 remaining subspecies along with Indochinese tiger, Siberian tiger, South China tiger, and Sumatran tiger are all critically endangered species. ~Very sad.
Tigers are such a great topic for you. I really like the composition of this one. I know a few other people said they didn’t but I do. I think it was Ramon that said having your subject in the center of the pieice is risky but I think it works. The only thing I’d suggest, like some other people, is to deepen the image more. I really wish I could do animals the way you do. Keep working with that program and I’m sure you’ll be doing some more great things!
Hey Justin, thank you! =) I forget to work in more than one layer…that would make it easier to alter the background.
I appreciate all of the nice comments as well as the critiques. =)
Stop talking ,and paint , paint, paint ….. nahhhhh just joking. Enjoy your art and relax is also important.
Yes sir, yes sir! —(going to the back of the class to pass notes) =)

Fantastic. =)
Realism or not it still looks like that tiger is out to get something. <D
Is speed paint somehting that is on GIMP? I've seen it being used on Youtube many times but i can't figure out what/where it is.
I don't know if this is true but I was told there are more endangered tigers kept as pets than there are left in the wild. It's a horrible feeling to know there's a dieing species out there and people still choose to poach them.
Hi @Giraffesanonymous, thank you =)
Speed painting is a painting made in any program or on canvas. You can download a free program like Camstudio to record your work with.
Yes, very sad that some care more about money than the species going extinct. –and the fewer there are left the more money they make.
Hello! I specialize in note cards and all I can say is that your works is amazing! They are very unique and I like the background of the video also! Keep it up!
Hi Note Card Artist =)
Thank you! :)
This is a beautiful painting! I never heard of speed painting. How far out of the loop am I? :( It’s so sad that these gorgeous creatures are endangered.
Hi @Askcherlock! Thank you, and thanks for visiting =)
Speed painting is just recording the progress of a painting …and speed it up, or make into a time-lapse video. So you get an idea of how the painting progressed –but just not as tedious as watching every brushstroke in real time.
–Yes very sad about the tigers.
Sad to hear about them diminishing in the wild. Magnificent creatures-the stuff poetry is made of:
“Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night
What immortal had or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?”-William Blake
I thought you captured very well in your picture the tiger’s beauty and ferocity.
That should be “hand” not had. The old senility kicking in.
Hi NP! –I like that poem. Thank you for visiting, and the kind comment =)
haha, yes I have many of those typo moments.
Hope you have a nice weekend!
I LOVE the eyes on the this tiger! Incredible!
Hi @liftingmeup! Thank you =)
Hello jayme
You’ll have to take my word for this; my handwriting is lovely.
Amongst the myriad skills of which I am not accomplished is painting. This is a wonderful, wonderful drawing. And great to watch the work in progress via You Tube. A big thumbs up from me.
Hello @ theroyalist. Ok, I take your word for it. If I have a good pen mine is sometimes legible.
-Thank you very much, I am glad you liked it =)
Just stumbled across your site and i have to say really nice work!! big thumbs up for this one, cats are difficult with all that fur!
Hi Brian, Thanks =) I saw your space art –really great work =)
Interesting. I’ve never used GIMP but I just had a look at a screenshot of it on Wikipedia and it looks very similar to Photoshop which I use all the time, though I don’t use a tablet or stylus thingy as my hands shake!
I don’t have the same criticisms as other commenters here, this is your painting and you should be allowed to paint as you want. I think it’s a nice painting, and as time passes your style will change. I’ve only just surfed in here to your blog so I’ve no idea if you’re new to art or are a professional! I’ll look at some other posts soon.
:)
Hi Val,
Thanks for the comment. –it’s ok I dont mind critiques. Sometimes they are really helpful, sometimes not so much. You just take what you need and never mind the rest.
–It’s true, for most of us our styles are always evolving.
–I honestly dont know how anyone can paint with a mouse. –I’ll have to visit your blog and check out your art too. =)
