Each year millions of dogs and cats are euthanized because not enough people are adopting them through local rescue groups and shelters. Many people buy dogs from pet stores instead, not aware that most come from puppy mills.

Along with all the wonderful benefits of owning an animal companion, much time and dedication is required in being a responsible pet owner. Some people can’t keep their pet for various reasons and are forced to leave them at a shelter, others simply abandon them. This cute little guy was at our local shelter. Someone had found him wandering on the side of the road.
Can I come home with you?

- Local dog rescue organizations consist of volunteers who help by fostering dogs in their own homes while they search for permanent placement, taking dogs to adoption events, fundraising to cover medical and boarding costs to name a few. Most rescue groups do not have the luxury of employees or people dedicated to promoting their efforts on a large-scale.
- As their own resources permit, these groups work with local animal shelters in an effort to place adoptable dogs that are scheduled for euthanization. The sad fact is that many dogs die every day before they find a “forever home”. The commercials you see on television about neglect and abuse are very real. Consumers can literally save a dog’s life simply by choosing adoption over a pet store or breeder purchase.
Many cats are also waiting for a loving home.
These are a few we visited yesterday…

“Nationwide, only about 20 percent of dogs in homes come from shelters—the rest come from other sources. It would only take a relatively small increase in the adoption rate along with a modest reduction in the birth rate to go a long way toward solving the problem of euthanizing healthy and treatable dogs in many communities.” ~Humane Society of the United States

Nice post and good info on pet adoption. Hope the cute pup and the pretty cats (and all the rescued pets!) get forever homes.
Hi Madilyn =)
Thank you. –Yes, it would be wonderful if more people went to shelters to adopt and give these guys a chance. I hope to be in a position to take one of them home soon. ~Thank you for stopping by!
Can’t believe someone left that poor little guy on the side of the road. Hope he gets scooped right up, along with those beautiful kitties! Thanks for participating in this blogging event….I’m so glad so many people joined in! Two days later, and I’m still making my way through all of these wonderful posts that people like you took the time to write. :-)
Hi Donna =)
I dont know how someone could do that either. Not sure how he ended up there, but I’m glad someone found him before he was hurt. –I hope they all get homes too! Wish I could take them all :] A nice thing about that shelter is they have rooms for the animals, not cages. They let them outside daily as well.
–A very cool event, I was happy to take part in it. Thank you as well, and thanks for stopping by :]
To save a pet requires full commitment to take care of the pet after adoption. I would love to do so for some times but time management is always an issue
I agree roentarre =)
Not considering the cost, time and other commitments to being a pet owner is the reason many people end up dumping a pet or leaving them at a shelter. Its great that you are considering pet ownership responsibly. Thank you for visiting!
Human callousness seems to be a universal phenomenon. Nothing beats us Indians though who routinely hurl away our own offspring and parents! Sorry to have digressed. All those cat and dog guys have such soulful eyes! It was difficult to continue watching Puppy Mills.
Hi umashankar =)
I know what you mean, suffering is certainly not limited to the animals on the planet. We can only do our individual best to try and make things better, sometimes one life at a time. Thank you for visiting –and caring!
Wonderful post, Jayme, and so sad. Those photos are so adorable. It’s hard to imagine they have no one to love them. What a great cause.
Hi Janene =)
I know, a very sad situation. –The guys in these photos are at least living in a No-Kill shelter. They have rooms to play in (not kept in cages) and have some very caring individuals taking care of them. They are just waiting to go home with someone.
It would be so cool if more people would choose to adopt from a pound or shelter when looking for a pet, and supported their local no kill shelters.
~Thank you for stopping by! ☺
People who abuse animals are sick. Cruel and mentally ill. My dogs are spoiled rotten, but there’s no more love than an animal can give.
Hi Vicki =)
I dont understand how anyone could abuse them. They are so unconditionally loving.
